Spinal manipulation

Spinal manipulation can be used to treat neck and back pain. Spinal manipulations can relieve back pain by taking pressure off sensitive nerves or tissue, increase range of motion, restoring blood flow, reducing muscle tension, and, like more active exercise, promote the release of endorphins within the body to act as natural painkillers.

A spinal manipulation is characterised by an audible click or pop when the joint is manipulated. This is known as cavitation when there is a release of carbon dioxide and nitrogen gas within the joint capsule due to a sudden change in pressure as the joint is manipulated.

During a spinal manipulation procedure, the dysfunctional/hypomobile (stiff) joint is gently position into the end of its current physiological range of movement. A high velocity, low amplitude thrust is then applied to the joint to restore and enhance the function and range of movement in the joint.

Spinal manipulation is a very safe procedure. As with any treatment there are occasionally contraindications when it would be inadvisable to perform such a treatment. In these circumstances an alternative treatment will be discussed and offered. Any treatment that is given will always be explained to you and we will obtain your consent before proceeding.
