Joint mobilisation

This is a common manual therapy technique employed by a physiotherapist to improve the range of movement and reduce stiffness in a joint. A joint can become painful when it becomes stiff. Joint stiffness can be associated with any joint, muscle, tendon and ligament injury. Joint mobilisations can be applied to the joints in the spine as well as peripheral joints such as the shoulder, elbow, wrist, knee and ankle. This treatment technique is helpful in cases where pain and joint tightness limit motion.

When a joint is mobilised an oscillatory pressure is applied with the aim of improving the flow of synovial fluid (the bodys lubricating fluid) between the joint services being mobilised. The technique also has an effect on stretching the local tissues and has been shown to have an effect on the pain processing mechanism thereby leading to a reduction in pain following the treatment.
